I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved being around kids and knew I could make an impact in the kindergarten classroom.
However, when I first started teaching, we had no writing curriculum. And in fact, no one was doing writing at all. What they were doing giving kids prompts, and it just wasn't working well. So I made lessons the way I knew was right.
I didn't always know how to teach writing though. They tell you to do it, but often teachers aren't given the resources to know HOW to do it. I’ve followed approaches that I knew in my gut didn’t make sense but felt like I had to follow the script.
Trust me, YOU know what’s best for kids—not some outdated approach. You can always switch things up, slow down and teach in a way that is developmentally appropriate and meets the needs of all learners—it’s never too late. Are you ready to have confident writers who love writers workshop each day?
