How to Use my Kindergarten Reading Curriculum at Home!
Kindergarten can be an overwhelming time for all involved, the teachers, the students, and their parents too! There are just so many things that a five-year-old is expected to learn! In the classroom, you have districts, principals, and other colleagues to keep you on track and help guide you to be sure your students are developing as they should. If you are a homeschool parent, it is not always so straightforward.
My Reading Curriculum will work perfectly both in the classroom and at home! Whether you are just trying to give your student some extra practice or need a full-blown curriculum to follow throughout the school year, this bundle will work for you!!
Here are three reasons My Reading Curriculum is an excellent homeschool resource!
Reason One: It Follows the Common Core Standards!
When you open up each unit you will find a list of all the Common Core Standards taught and met throughout the unit. Using this as a guide you can be sure you are meeting all the expectations a kindergarten student needs too!
Each unit is about 1 month long and throughout the lessons, your students will begin to master the standards listed. For example, unit one focuses on concepts of print. You can be sure that by the end of the unit, your students will have mastered (or be well on their way to mastering!) standard CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K1.. In other, real words, your students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
I take the guesswork out and give you peace of mind, you’ll know you are teaching key concepts throughout the year!
Reason Two: It Can Easily Be Adjusted to Meet the Needs of Your Family and Home!
These lessons are short, sweet, and to the point. Whether in the classroom or at home, kindergarten students learn best in short chunks of time. Each lesson throughout the entire curriculum includes a mini-lesson that is only about 10 minutes long. There is no reason to ask your student to sit and listen for longer than that! After about 10 minutes of explicit instruction, you’ll introduce your student to an engaging activity or have them read independently.
These short and effective lessons leave plenty of room for you to teach your other children, too! Soon after beginning these lessons, your kindergarten student will gain the independence they need to read quietly by themselves or complete the activity for the day.
Reason Three: Everything You Need is Included!
These lessons are built to be simple and effective for both teachers and students! If you are homeschooling, the last thing you need is to buy a million different materials for each and every lesson. Once you download the bundle, you’ll have access to daily slides, anchor charts (that can be printed or shown digitally), print-and-go worksheets, and daily lessons! If you have crayons, scissors, glue, and pencils, you will be able to teach this unit!
I don’t have a specific list of mentor texts because you can use almost any children’s book you have in your library at home! I do recommend a few but the lessons can be adjusted and completed without them.
The one thing I highly suggest is giving your students access to a large variety of texts. Whether you have a library at home, or you go to the library to pick out new books often, access to books is key to fostering a love of reading!
