Teaching Number Sense to Kindergarteners

Teaching Number Sense to Kindergarteners: A 4-Week Numbers Unit (0–20)

A strong understanding of numbers is the foundation of all future math learning. Introducing my 4-week Number Sense Unit for Kindergarten!  This unit is specifically created to help students build confidence and fluency with numbers 0–20 through purposeful, hands-on experiences.

Instead of simply memorizing numbers, students explore how numbers work, how they’re formed, and how quantities can be shown in multiple ways.

What Students Learn

Throughout this unit, kindergarten students learn to:

  • Count, recognize, write, and represent numbers 0–20

  • Show numbers using ten frames, tally marks, base ten blocks, and counters

  • Understand how numbers are made by exploring tens and ones

  • Represent quantities in multiple ways to deepen number sense

Daily routines and consistent practice help students build confidence while developing a strong mathematical foundation.

Hands-On Learning That Makes Numbers Click

Kindergarteners learn best when math is concrete and visual. This unit is packed with engaging activities that allow students to touch, move, and explore numbers through:

  • Hands-on math centers

  • Interactive math games

  • Daily number routines that build fluency and confidence

These experiences help students truly understand quantities rather than just counting by rote.

Visuals that Matter

This unit includes multiple types of visuals! From posters of base ten number knowledge to visually appealing number posters, students will be able to refer to these images to understand numbers deeper, seeing them in many different ways that help make strong visual connections.

The number formation poem posters give students an easy, memorable way to learn how to write each number correctly. These visual support and reinforce daily learning and build confidence for young mathematicians.

Deepening the Reach

Assessing and communicating is often forgotten in the hurry of teaching when content is so widespread. This comprehensive unit includes all you need to make it easy to assess students and communicate with parents! The simple and quick pre- and post-assessments help to track student growth, while parent letters sent home before and after the unit keep families informed and able to support learning at home. Easy peasy!

Setting the Stage for Future Success

This 4-week Number Sense Unit is designed to develop deep understanding, not just surface skills. By building fluency, confidence, and strong number sense early on, students are better prepared for addition, subtraction, place value, and problem-solving throughout the school year.

If you’re looking for a structured, engaging way to teach numbers 0–20 in kindergarten, this unit provides everything you need to set your students up for success.
